Is Digital format printing an effective cut price solution for label production?

With the current financial doom and gloom being forecast throughout the manufacturing industry the question of technology providing a cost effective edge to combat the current storm has never been more relevant.
The suitability of digital labels in the initial wave of digital format evolution was seen to pose no threat to the established printing techniques - Screen printed labels, graphic overlays etc
It is becoming apparent that more and more industrial labels are being produced using digital transfer methods and this will obviously allow label production to be quicker and more cost effective.
